Survey (or State Survey)

As used in long-term care, the word survey refers to the process a state agency uses to ensure that all nursing homes that receive federal and state funding are in compliance with state and federal regulations, including standards of care. All federally funded nursing homes are surveyed at least annually to ensure compliance with CMS (Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services) regulations. The results of the latest survey must be posted and readily accessible in all nursing homes and is also available online at Nursing Home Compare (www.medicare.gov/NHcompare/).
